Day #3: Car Troubles
My car is acting goofy. If I don’t drive it every day (or maybe every other day), the battery is dead. Just won’t start. It started doing this last winter, but we couldn’t figure out why. Here’s how it went down:
Me: My car battery dies after a day or two.
Mechanic #1: Okay. Looks to be your battery. That’ll be $60 please.
Me: Bummer! But that’s okay because my battery should be under warranty, I’m only a couple of years into a 7-year battery.
Mechanic #1: That’s great!
Me: Dear Battery Maker…your battery is bad. Please replace.
Battery Maker: No, it’s not. It’s holding it’s charge just fine. Something in your car is draining it.
Me: Man! (Back to the mechanic.)
Me: They say it’s my car.
Mechanic #1: It isn’t. See this little test here? It says it’s your battery. I’ll write you a note.
Me: Thanks. (Back to the Battery Maker.)
Me: They still say it’s the battery. I have a note.
Battery Maker: That test is bogus. It isn’t the battery. If you want, we can sell you another battery.
Me: I don’t want to pay for another battery – especially when my mechanic says your batteries no worky.
Battery Maker: Your decision.
Me: (Onto another mechanic.)
Me: You’re my tie breaker. Do you agree with Mechanic #1 or Battery Maker?
Mechanic #2: (after several days of testing) I don’t know. I lean towards agreeing with Mechanic #1, but I can’t be certain.
Me: Sigh…
So we replaced the battery. With a different brand.
But starting a few weeks ago, the problem came back. I went to go run errands, had both boys loaded into the car and yet, again!, it wouldn’t start.
So now we’ve taken it to the mechanic – a third one. This time, it went straight to the dealer. We’ll see what they say.
So here’s my car. Sitting in the garage. It will start because Jeff hooked it up to charge the battery last night.
