So, with the arrival of our next little one in October, we’ve been making a ‘Big Kid’ room for Phinehas out of our guest room/office (Jeff calls it’s the ‘Lady Roost’ since I’ve been the primary user of it). This allows us to leave the nursery as it is since it’s already gender neutral and set up well for infants. I want his new room to be boy-friendly, but not exclusively so. Since we have a 3-bedroom house, I kind of seeing that room as being the room for the non-infant kids in our family. At least for a while. So as we have more children, the infant will be in the nursery and we’ll move kids into the ‘Big Kid’ room until a) we move to a different house OR b) stop having kids and then make a ‘Girls Room’ and a ‘Boys Room’. Maybe that’s naive, but we only have the 3 bedrooms, so that’s the plan for now.
The first task is to paint the room.
Here is what I am working with:
- The room is already painted in a color that I like. It’s a blueish/gray color and I think it makes a nice base color for the room. I’m not looking to start over completely.
- The room has 1 window right across from the door. It’s the smallest wall, but it is the first wall you see.
- I like a gray/red/white combination. Or possibly a gray/yellow combo. That’d be nice too.
- I’m putting a new crib in that room along with a twin bed (that’s been collecting dust in our basement). They’re both oak (aka: not painted white or a dark color).
Here are some looks that I like:

Three Color With Stripe from The Potters-Place
I like her 3-color theme. I would keep the gray as the main color and add 2 more colors at the top of the walls.
Two Colors with a Ledge from Sarah Richardson Design
The ledge in this room was really meant to have a place to put alphabet letters. Maybe I would want a border that’s thicker to display things later? But then again, that’s pretty high up, so it isn’t likely to house any Awana trophies.
Waist High Typical Chair Rail Found on Project Nursery
I like that this one has 2 colors of gray. I do wonder about the long-term in a room like this – will the chair rail just get in the way? In particular, hers looks great because she has moulding near the ceiling. That’s probably more than I want to bite off.
Tall Typical Chair Rail Found on Project Nursery
This one has a chair rail, but up higher. It kind of makes the room seem taller…or is that my imagination?
Room with Ledge and “Board” From Home Stories A to Z
One Striped Wall Next to Solid Colors From New York Nursery Tales
I like this one as it’s the first room that made me think – “Oh, I could paint stripes on just one wall and the stripes wouldn’t have to be the same color as the other walls.” This one has promise! I think I’d even do the yellow/white stripes that she has.
Chair Rail with Stripes from The Rooster and the Hen
Another stripe (but this time vertical stripes), combined with a chair rail. Lovely!
Full Blown Shelf As Shown on Architecture Art Design
Maybe instead of chair rail or a mini ledge (if I did it high up), I could do a shelf around the room? Then it would be deep enough to display photos or trophies or keepsakes as he got older. Then the question becomes — all around the room? Just one wall?
