Phinehas turns 1 next Friday. And you know what that means? A first birthday party!
And if pinterest can be trusted, that means an over-the-top, bigger-than-life blow out of a party. Must have no less than 30 guests – most of them his friends, lots of decorations, and a theme perfect for a little boy turning 1. Hundreds of dollars or hours spent on DIY projects must be spent.
And, yet, that ain’t what will be happening next week. Instead, it all started when my brother (Uncle Kyle) planned a visit for that same weekend. It became a great opportunity for a family dinner. My mom will make her homemade tacos. I ordered a cake from Hy-Vee. My sister is picking up some decorations. It’s perfect, really. We don’t have a great place for hosting people, so this way we get to have a family party without the formality of a restaurant party room. If we had a big enough place, we would’ve just had family over to our house.
The cake is Elmo. Why Elmo? After all, Phinehas doesn’t know who Elmo is, but my niece Capri does and it’s also her birthday. Turns out 1-year-olds (at least my 1-year-old) don’t have strong preferences. Sure, he likes playing with cars. But he also likes chewing on a toothbrush. He likes reading books. But he also likes taking my pots and pans out of the cabinet. Basically, he has simple tastes and pleasures. It’d be a little strange to put a toothbrush or pots and pans on a birthday cake, so Elmo it is! I did get him a little cake for himself that has a “1” on it. Cake smash time!
There will be gifts, of course. We got him a little train set. I actually ordered it at Christmas time when there were lots of sales going on. It’s still in the big brown box it shipped in; I’ve been using it as a baby gate since it fits perfectly across the basement steps! We’ll have to get a “real” baby gate for those stairs now. (He’s great at going up, but hasn’t mastered the going down yet.)
That’s how we’re rolling at this house!
