We’re in the process of moving, so I thought I’d take a moment to give you my best moving tips.
I only have one: Be prepared for your movers.
That’s it. Do what you gotta do to be prepared for your movers. Whether your mover is Uncle Joe or a professional moving company. Whether they’re just moving boxes or moving furniture. Whether you’re moving across the country or across the street. Doesn’t matter. When they show up, you gotta be prepared.
No matter how much you feed them, it doesn’t make up the fact that they’ll be irritated if they have to wait you pack up “just one more box”.
Meaning:
- All your boxes are packed and ready.
- All your clothes are out of the dresser drawers.
- The moving vehicles are there.
- Nothing is still in cupboards or cabinets that needs to be moved.
If you have to take a day off work to prepare for them, that’s what you need to do.
If you need to invite friends over to help you pack boxes, that’s what you need to do.
If you need to move 1/2 your stuff one day, unload boxes to have more boxes available later, that’s what you need to do.
It doesn’t matter if it’s taken you 5 minutes to get organized for them or 5 months – spend the necessary time for your situation getting ready! I’ve found that movers don’t want to be kept waiting. They want to get in, move the stuff, get out. Being ready for them is a thoughtful and considerate thing to do.
So, if any of you reading are helping us move next month, we’ll be ready for you!
Actually, there’s a guy I know who’s biggest beef when “moving” someone is that they aren’t *moving*. And he said before that if they want help packing, he’s happy to help do that, but ask for help packing, not moving. He said he has left people’s places before cause they were still packing.
So true! It’s gotta be a huge frustration to get there and to have them not be ready for you. Especially when you’re helping a buddy out!
