Mars Hill had a post today on 6 Really Negative Women in Proverbs. I have some comments on some of them. Today, “The Foolish Woman”
“The woman Folly is loud;
she is seductive and knows nothing.” Proverbs 9:13
Loud and foolish. You put those things together, that is a bad résumé. This is a woman who thinks she knows what she’s talking about. She doesn’t know what she’s talking about, but, she’s so loud that it almost is convincing. Some women think, “If I yell and scream and chuck stuff and declare war –” Proverbs says that is just foolish.
Ever encountered the Foolish Woman? Ever been her? I have. I look back on some of my younger years, particularly when I first started working, and I recognize now that I was just foolish. I didn’t really know what I was talking about, but I wanted to impress people. So what’d I do? I’d talk. I’d just talk for the sake of talking. I’d form an opinion just to have one. No matter how uneducated it was. I needed to be heard and so gosh darn it, I was going to be.
Luckily, I’ve matured out of that – for the most part. And it is something you should grow out of, but some people never do. It takes some hard life lessons where people would prove me wrong or life would prove me wrong before I recognized that it’s best to just shut my mouth if I really don’t have anything to contribute. It’s best to follow my mom’s advice: “If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything.” Or in the words of Abraham Lincoln: “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.”
But I still regret those younger years. Bummer that I wasn’t more ladylike.
