How do you celebrate wedding anniversaries?
Growing up, we didn’t celebrate my parent’s anniversary. My father passed away when I was almost 8, so if we did celebrate them before then, I don’t remember.
So now that I have my own wedding anniversary to celebrate, I’m not sure what to do! On one hand, we’ve already ruled out gifts for anniversaries, Valentine’s Day, Christmas and birthdays. But, on the other hand, we’ve also said that just because you don’t give a physical gift, it doesn’t mean you don’t celebrate. We certainly don’t ignore holidays!
We couldn’t really settle on anything that we wanted to do. We had ideas, but nothing “stuck”. Nothing said “Yes, we must do that! Yes, we want to do that!” Go to dinner? Go on a mini-vacation? Go back to the hotel we first stayed at? I didn’t want to do anything huge (I mean, after all, it’s just one little year of marriage). But I didn’t want to ignore it either. What to do? What to do?
I went searching for ideas and I’ve posted some of my favorite ones. For us, we’ll be:
- Going out to dinner. (Pretty much a must for us!) We’ll be going to the same place we had our wedding’s rehearsal Dinner.
- Cutting a cake.
- Taking a picture. I got this idea from a gal’s blog. They take a picture every year on their anniversary.
I like traditions. So, every year, we’ll have a cake with the number of years we’ve been married on it. Every year, we’ll take our picture. By the time our 50th anniversary rolls around, we’ll have quite the collection of memories!
I ordered the smallest cake possible (like a wedding cake topper) with a number 1 on it. Yeah, it looks a lot like a 1st birthday cake that little munchkins smash their fists and face into. But this is a tradition we can follow every year.

Did you save the cake topper from your wedding? or did you not have a cake…I can’t remember – I just remember the gobs and gobs of candy… :0)
We actually did save it for a while, but that puppy was huge!!! It took up so much room in the freezer. So, a couple of months after the wedding, we defrosted it, took it to my mom’s house for a family dinner. Really, it had at least 25 servings in it. It was still delicious! Just not practical to save for a year.
